Sometimes things have to be done fast. And hip-hop artist Phrase's new music video was no exception. Universal Records wanted a music video to release with his latest single, 'Skylight', with just two weeks from initial concept to finished piece.
Never ones to shy away from a challenge, we took it on and got working some Liquid magic. Phrase wanted a video based on the 80's Japanese cult classic 'Monkey Magic'. We had a ball recreating the characters, the scenes, and the effects, with a bit of a modern twist.
Director of Photography, Simon Ozilinz (who has also worked on Empire of the Sun's last 2 cracker music videos) brought his unique, symerrical quality to the shots. We shot on RED using Simon's Russian anamorphic prime lenses for that uber wide cinemascope look.
Marcus had his work cut out directing the shoot in just two days. But the performances were hot from the all-star cast including Spiderbait's Kram, Jade Macrae, and Jan Skubiszeweski from Jackson Jackson, andnot to mention a live pig!!
The clip is fresh and fun, with enough throw-backs to the original Monkey Magic to impress fans. It was a crazy couple of weeks, but we think it was worth it! Check out the video. Currently smashing it on all major music video shows.
